Frequently Asked Questions
Beyond preventing unplanned litters, these procedures can lower the risk of certain reproductive cancers and eliminate the risk of pyometra, a serious uterine infection in intact females. They can also reduce hormone-driven behaviours such as roaming, marking, mounting, and some forms of aggression.
The ideal age varies based on your pet's species, breed, and size. There isn't a single answer that fits every pet. We'll discuss the right timing for your individual pet during a wellness visit.
Your pet's personality and temperament typically remain the same. What may change are hormone-driven behaviours such as roaming, marking, or restlessness around other animals. Behavioural concerns already present before surgery may not resolve afterward; spaying or neutering is more likely to help prevent some of these behaviours from developing.
A veterinary technician will discuss a customized plan with you during the pre-surgical consultation. The plan generally includes pre-surgical medications to improve anesthetic safety and help your pet feel calm and comfortable. We favour fasting times individualized for your pet's needs, and we'll provide instructions specific to your pet.
Most patients recover in Casco Pet WELLKennels, designed to be warmer and quieter than traditional cages. Gentle heating, calming light settings, and clear visibility help your pet rest comfortably while our veterinary team monitors their recovery.
We use medication before, during, and after surgery to keep your pet as comfortable as possible. Most pets go home with a pain plan tailored to their recovery needs. We also use laser therapy as a standard part of post-operative care to help reduce pain and inflammation and support wound healing.
Most pets recover within about 10 days. Your pet will need an E-collar to prevent licking the incision, though a medical pet shirt may be suitable in some cases. Post-operative medication will help them rest and stay comfortable. Your pet will need to remain calm, and the incision must stay clean and dry. We'll provide detailed aftercare instructions before you go home.
Just your pet and any paperwork we provided ahead of time. You're also welcome to bring an item that smells familiar, such as a blanket, towel, toy, or worn piece of clothing, to help your pet feel more comfortable.
